Norway kick off Women’s Euros with win over Switzerland in opening match

Julia Stierl accidentally scored an own goal in the second half, giving Norway a 2-1 victory over Switzerland in the opening match of the European Women’s Championship in Basel.

The Swiss took the lead in the first half with Nadine Riesen's goal, but Norway's captain Ada Hegerberg equalized with a fantastic header before Stierl's mishap.

Despite missing a penalty in the second half, Hegerberg's goal marked her 50th international goal and turned the game around for Norway.

Norway had struggled in previous Euro matches but managed to secure a victory even as Switzerland dominated play for most of the game.

Switzerland had their chances with Geraldine Reuteler hitting the crossbar and Riesen scoring the opener, but ultimately their efforts fell short.

Switzerland's hopes for a comeback were dashed when Stierl's own goal put Norway in the lead, and despite their efforts, they couldn't find an equalizer.

Norway's defense held strong in the final minutes, denying Switzerland any chance of salvaging a draw.
